South Carolina Department of Corrections Implements Advanced Counter-Drone Strategies

Challenge

The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) has faced escalating challenges with contraband deliveries facilitated by drones. In 2023 alone, there were 358 drone sightings near correctional institutions, a significant increase from previous years.

These drones have been used to smuggle items such as cell phones, drugs, and weapons into prison facilities, compromising security and inmate safety.

The primary challenge for SCDC was the detection and prevention of unauthorized drone incursions. Traditional security measures were insufficient against the evolving tactics of contraband smugglers using drones. The department needed a comprehensive solution to detect, track, and stop these drone threats effectively.

Solution

In response to this growing threat, SCDC deployed Dedrone’s advanced drone detection systems that are capable of tracking drones and identifying the location of their pilots. This technology enables law enforcement to detect an incoming drone before it is over the prison facility and to apprehend individuals attempting to smuggle in contraband using a drone.

Result

The implementation of counter-drone strategies has led to significant improvements in prison security:

Contraband Interception: Over the 2023 holiday season, SCDC thwarted 24 drone attempts, confiscating 16 packages containing drugs and other contraband.

Arrests: In 2023, 18 individuals were arrested on charges related to drone contraband smuggling, highlighting the effectiveness of detection and enforcement efforts.

Deterrence: The presence of surveillance drones and detection systems has acted as a deterrent, reducing the frequency of contraband delivery attempts.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections' proactive approach against unauthorized drones, including drone detection technologies, has enhanced the safety and security of its facilities. By staying ahead of evolving contraband smuggling tactics, SCDC sets a precedent for correctional institutions nationwide.

Customer quotation mark

The likelihood of [drone pilots] being watched and caught has gone up exponentially...We are definitely catching more contraband...We’re catching more drones than I’ve seen.
